Last night the Colorado Avalanche announced before their game in Toronto that goalie Darcy Kuemper would not be well enough to dress for the team's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Avalanche immediately recalled Justus Annunen from the Colorado Eagles, but due to travel and league protocols there was some concern of whether Annunen would make it on time. This led to the Avalanche signing University of Toronto goaltender Jett Alexander to an Emergency Backup Goalie contract.
Jonas Johansson started the game, and struggled mightily with Alexander backing him up on the bench, until finally AHL goaltender Justus Annunen arrived during the 2nd period.
Sure, the 22-year old didn't get into the game and he wasn't able to haunt the Leafs way David Ayers was, but now he has a story to tell.
But let's take a look at who Jett Alexander is!
Alexander grew up playing for the OJHL's North York Rangers and even set the league shutout record in 2018-2019 with 10 shutouts in 43 games. From there he moved to the BCHL in 2019-2020 before moving to the University of Toronto this season, where he's only played 1 game.
Last night is likely the closest Alexander will ever get to an NHL rink, but if that means getting stick taps and taking shots from the likes of
Nathan MacKinnon and
Gabriel Landeskog then I think he'll happily take it!
After the game Alexander met with The Athletic's Peter Baugh and shared some details about his experience.
«(I) didn't really know what was going on."
«Obviously growing up watching the Leafs, being a fan of the team and getting to be on the same ice as all these guys with how good both these teams are, it was kind of just surreal.»
«It's crazy to see the difference in levels just going up. (I'm) playing university hockey in Canada now, and I'm looking at those guys just like 'holy shit, they're so good.'»
