With the ongoing conflict engaged in Ukraine, it appears a group of Russian players got together on the Telegram app and discussed issuing a joint statement in regards to the Russian Invasion. Unfortunately for those players though, apparently they couldn't agree on the details.
TSN's Rick Westhead released the following information on the matter today:
A group of Russian NHL players on a group chat on the Telegram app discussed making a joint statement about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, two sources familiar with the matter tell me
When players couldn't agree on what that statement should say, group chat was disbanded.
Clearly there is no information provided about this interaction as to why they couldn't come to a consensus, but the disbanding of the group chat clearly shows at least some discord between the group. With new Russian laws prohibiting anyone from speaking out or providing "Fake News" about the conflict it's clear to see that some players are in a difficult position.
Just as an example, New York Rangers Artemi Panarin had damaging information released about him that ended up being deemed "propaganda" after he openly spoke out about Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
We continue to hope for a speedy resolution to this war that is currently ongoing in the Ukraine.
