The Colorado Avalanche are the defending Stanley Cup Champions and are hoping to repeat next season. They just signed their star forward today to a large contract, making him the highest paid player in the league, and while he is still on his team-friendly deal for the upcoming season they're hoping to take advantage of the cap space and win another cup.
The team announced today that they've signed 2012 3rd overall pick Alex Galchenyuk to a PTO.
Galchenyuk showed in his early days that he is a very talented player capable of scoring 30 goals. He has put up 40+ points 5 times but never seems to be given the chance to expand his role on any team.
The 28 year old played in Arizona last season where he scored 21 points in 60 games playing a very limited role.
In the 2020-21 season it looked like he found a home with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but in the playoffs he made a play which gave the opposing team a breakaway and many blamed him for losing the game.
It has been rumoured that Galchenyuk has a relationship with his father that causes him to leave the locker room to text with his father and that even on occasions teams have taken away his phone.
This could be Galchenyuk's final chance to show the NHL what he can do, and with the Avalanche losing second line center
Nazem Kadri, he has a chance to break into the top 6.
As someone who has always been a Galchenyuk fan, even back in his Sarnia Sting days, I really hope he gets it together and thrives this season.
