The Toronto Maple Leafs have gone their first three games of the playoffs without superstar winger William Nylander. Today it was revealed that he is dealing with migraine headaches, raising the concern level for many fans.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman was the first to report that Nylander is dealing with ongoing migraines today. Even he was careful with what he revealed though, not mentioning the diagnosis in his tweet, forcing readers to click on the Sportsnet article to find out what is going on with Nylander. This is a rather unusual move from Friedman.

Admittedly, I'm not always comfortable discussing injuries at this time of year. The William Nylander situation is unique, even by Toronto standards:

According to multiple sources, William Nylander's absence from the Toronto lineup has to do with a migraine so severe that team doctors tested to see if he suffered a concussion. One of the reasons for the secrecy around his situation is that an actual diagnosis has been hard to come by, whether it is a migraine, a concussion or something else that could affect that area.

Perhaps he was so careful because it sounds like the Leafs themselves are still looking for some clarity on Nylander's condition. Regardless though, the fan reaction has been tough. Some fans have criticized Nylander for not being tough enough, but others are deeply concerned about his health. One fan made a particular comparison to former top draft pick Nolan Patrick, whose career was derailed by constant concussions, leading him to have severe migraines on a regular basis.

I think I've seen this film before and I didn't like the ending

i was trying not to think about the comparison

Patrick was drafted 2nd overall by the Flyers in 2017, but has only gotten into 222 career games since then. He has 32 career goals and 77 points, including 7 points in 25 games with the Vegas Golden Knights this season. Should Nylander suddenly suffer the same fate, it would be a huge travesty for hockey as well as a nightmare for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
