The beginning of the NHL season is a cautious time for many. Every team wants to go into the season with a fully healthy roster, and so many precautions are taken to prevent unnecessary injuries.
Unfortunately for the Colorado Avalanche, the worst may have just be realized.
Blackwood Suffers 'Loud' Injury During Practice
It was reported today that during a training session, Colorado Avalanche goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood suffered a concerning injury.
While an injury of any kind is unfortunate and bad news for the Avalanche, it's been reported that Blackwood's leg injury was "loud" and could be heard throughout the entire stadium.
Blackwood tried to push off his right leg and made an audible sound I could hear from the stands. He has also not taken any shots, a sign that he is not healthy enough to make quick movements.
This is incredibly concerning for the Avalanche, who were counting on going into the season with the star goaltender healthy.
What Now?
If Blackwood' injury is so serious that he cannot start the season for Colorado, Scott Wedgewood will be the presumptive starter for Colorado. If the injury is minor and the recovery time is short, the Avalanche may be inclined to ride it out for the time being, as it could give them an opportunity to showcase Ilya Nabokov, their blue chip goaltending prospect, in an NHL setting.
However, if the injuries to Blackwood are serious, and his recovery time is significant, the Avalanche may inquire about the services of free agent Carter Hart. It's been reported that Hart and his camp are taking calls from teams, and while Colorado has not been one of the names in the mix thus far, this injury could change that.
For now, we'll wait and see what the diagnosis is for Blackwood.
