Dallas Stars shed cap to chase Jason Robertson.

Nashville may have just landed their next franchise center for almost nothing.
Per Pierre LeBrun, the Dallas Stars are sending forward Mavrik Bourque and defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin to the Nashville Predators for Nashville's own 2027 second-round pick and Vegas' 2028 third-round pick.
The framing on this deal is that Dallas solved a cap headache. Stars brass was openly concerned about rival teams submitting an offer sheet on Bourque, a 24-year-old center who just scored 20 goals in 82 games.
By trading him now, Dallas avoids the nightmare scenario of matching a rich offer sheet while already scrambling to re-sign Jason Robertson.
That narrative is correct.
It is also only half the story.

MacFarland's first move rewrites Nashville's rebuild

Chris MacFarland was hired as Nashville Predators GM on June 2, 2026 after spending four years as Colorado Avalanche general manager, winning a Presidents' Trophy and two division titles.
His first notable transaction is a declaration of intent.
MacFarland did not spend top picks on a veteran rental or a salary dump. He acquired a legitimate 20-goal scorer at 24 for a second and a third.
Bourque was selected 30th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. He has improved his point total in each NHL season, posting 41 points this past year in middle-six minutes.
In Nashville, he projects into a top-six role alongside Filip Forsberg and rising prospects Fedor Svechkov and Matthew Wood.

Dallas wins the present, Nashville wins the future

Lyubushkin's $3.25 million cap hit disappearing gives Dallas the room they needed to make Robertson a competitive offer.
That may save their contention window in 2026-27.
Nashville, however, just paid well below market rate for a player who was drawing offer-sheet interest across the entire league.
MacFarland extracted maximum value from Dallas's desperation - and it took him less than a month on the job to do it.
