Connor Bedard just took a giant step toward returning to the Blackhawks lineup. The captain practiced Sunday without the non-contact jersey he had worn in recent sessions, joining teammates for a full workout.

The timing is what makes this huge. Bedard underwent left shoulder surgery in early July, and Chicago set a four-month recovery window that pointed to an early November comeback.
Participating in a full practice with weeks to spare suggests he is ahead of that schedule.

Why Chicago Needs Him Back

The Blackhawks could use the help. They fell 5-2 to Carolina on Saturday, and Frank Nazar has been working as the top-line center while Bedard recovers.
Chicago opened its 84-game season in late September without its franchise player, and he has not yet played a game since being named the 37th captain in team history.
Bedard sounded confident but admitted the waiting game has been tough. Speaking to reporters, he said: “It's almost more frustrating near the end of it than the start of it.” He added that he wanted to play in the opener but knows he has to be smart.

What Happens Next

There is still no return date, and Bedard said no specific game is circled. Still, practicing in a regular sweater is the step that moves him closer to game action.
It is also a major leap from Sept. 23, when coach Jeff Blashill said the center was not close to joining practice.
Sunday's session also tests the shoulder strength that matters so much for a player whose shot release is among his best weapons. Chicago should still tread carefully.
Bedard chose not to have surgery on his right shoulder last season and his production dipped after he returned, so the team has every reason to avoid rushing this recovery.
Early November remains the working target, but the Blackhawks could get their captain back sooner if he keeps clearing steps without setbacks. Seeing the captain in a regular sweater is the kind of progress the organization has waited months for.
