The Philadelphia Flyers appear ready to turn the page on defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, and the timeline for a move may be shorter than fans expect.

Insider Frank Seravalli reports that the team does not currently have plans to extend defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen's contract.
Seravalli also says the veteran “will be one of the leading trade deadline commodities,” with a deal possible “perhaps even sooner if the Flyers continue to struggle.”

Why the Flyers Are Ready to Sell

Ristolainen is playing the final year of the five-year, $5.1 million AAV contract he signed in 2022, which leaves Philadelphia with a straightforward choice.
The club can pay him again, or it can cash in before the asset walks away for nothing. Seravalli's report points toward the second route.
The logic is easy to follow. Contenders crave a big right-shot defenseman who plays a physical game, and buyers tend to overpay for that profile every spring.
Ristolainen has been a fixture in trade chatter before, so another round of rumors will surprise nobody around the league. What changes now is the reported lack of an extension plan, which raises the odds that he moves.

What Happens If the Flyers Keep Struggling

Seravalli's wording leaves the door open for an early deal. If Philadelphia keeps dropping points in the standings, management has every reason to move Ristolainen before rival buyers run out of cap space and spend elsewhere.
A sluggish start would also give the front office a strong argument to sell now and collect the best possible return.
A strong run could change the conversation, of course. Winning teams rarely rush to move regular defensemen, and Ristolainen's physical presence has real value to a club trying to climb. Still, no extension plan suggests Philadelphia sees his future elsewhere.
For now, the Flyers are watching the standings, while contenders around the NHL keep an eye on a defenseman who could become one of the most talked-about names on the market.
Every game Philadelphia plays from here adds weight to the decision, and fans should expect the Ristolainen rumors to grow louder.
