The Connor Hellebuyck saga in Winnipeg may be taking an unexpected turn. The 2025 Hart and Vezina Trophy winner still wants a trade, but there is now talk that he is thinking about suiting up for the Jets again after all.

Insider David Pagnotta described the mixed messages around the star goaltender:
You're starting to hear some conversations of maybe Connor Hellebuyck starting to think about rejoining the [Jets] while...wanting a trade, while simultaneously hearing that the guys in room aren't really gonna welcome him with open arms.

Why a Return Is Complicated

That is a tricky spot for everyone involved. Winnipeg has struggled to land an offer that excites the front office, and Frank Seravalli recently reported the bids so far have been underwhelming.
Buffalo has been considered the closest suitor, while Elliotte Friedman reported that Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and at least one other goalie have put Winnipeg on their no-trade lists.
A stalled trade market could explain why a return is even being discussed. Staying put would not be a clean reset, though.
Darren Dreger reported the Jets want any Hellebuyck trade to send a message to their dressing room, and a cool welcome from teammates would turn a reunion into a daily storyline.

What Comes Next for Winnipeg

Friedman has pointed out that strong play from Clay Stevenson and Stuart Skinner could change what Winnipeg demands in return, possibly breaking the logjam.
Time is also a factor. Every day without a resolution keeps pressure on the front office and a roster that has to prepare for the season either way. Watch for more updates from insiders as teams reassess their interest, and for any sign the tone in the Jets' room is shifting.
For Hellebuyck, the calculation is about leverage and legacy. A return would put one of the best goalies in hockey back in a market that wants to win, but only if the room is willing to move forward.
For the Jets, the question is whether a patched relationship is worth more than the best offer on the table.
