Eriks Mateiko was set to represent Latvia at the upcoming Olympics, but now, a brutal injury will force him to miss the event and the 2025/26 season.
The 2026 Olympic Games has been hyped up as one of the most exciting events in recent sporting memory, and after the fireworks of the Four Nations Face Off, this should be another fantastic tournament.
However, this time there's more than just four teams, and while the USA and Canada are seen as favourites once again, there's many other teams like Germany, Denmark and Latvia that could surprise many people.
Team Latvia lose talented young forward
One player that the latter was looking forward to having in the tournament was former World Juniors standout Eriks Mateiko, who will now miss the tournament with injury after suffering a skate blade to the achilles with the Hershey Bears in the AHL, an unfortunate incident that is going to cost him the rest of the season.
This comes after the 20-year old posted five goals in five games for Latvia at the 2025 World Juniors, and now, he'll miss his first opportunity to represent the senior team at a big tournament.
This season, Mateiko has tallied 1 goal and 6 points in 27 games for the Bears in the American Hockey League, and while he may never be a star at the top level, he's got the ability to be an NHLer for a long time, as well as a key piece of Team Latvia.
Beyond Mateiko, this Latvia team is still one with talents such as Teddy Blueger, Elvis Merzlikins and Arturs Silovs, so while they potentially aren't a gold medal threat, this shouldn't be a team to take lightly even following this news.
