Concerning Comments From Alex Ovechkin Resurface as He Approaches Goal Record
After two goals on Friday night, Alex Ovechkin has tied Wayne Gretzky for most goals in NHL history with 894, and on Sunday in New York, the overwhelming expectation is that he's ready to take over top spot in league history.
While Ovechkin's contract runs through the 2025/26 campaign, old comments from back in 2019 from The Great 8 have emerged, where he stated that if he ever passed Gretzky, we wouldn't see him again.
Back in 2019, Alex Ovechkin was asked what he'd do if he broke Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.
Ovechkin's response: "You'll probably never see me on the ice again."
Interviewer: "Instant retirement?"
Ovechkin: "Yeah, right away. See ya."

That came shortly after he culminated a 13 year chase for the Stanley Cup, which the Capitals won in 2018, and since he is yet to pass Gretzky, fans, especially those in Washington have happily watched him for the following six years until now.
The few comments we've seen about Ovi's future in recent times signify that he could be ready to head home to Russia and the KHL after the 2025/26 season, and given that he'll be 41-years of age by that time, it's safe to say he should be able to ride off into the sunset on his own terms.
For at least one more day however, the chase remains on, and once
he passes Gretzky with his 895th career goal, he may be asked about those questions and his future again, but for right now, the Capitals captain remains under contract for another season beyond this one, so fans should relish the opportunity to watch him for at least another year.
