Washington DC, the capitol of the United States, just created a new holiday in honor of Alex Ovechkin.

Alex Ovechkin is officially the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history.
The great eight finally passed Wayne Gretzky on the all-time goals leaderboard earlier this month, when he fired a shot past Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin.
The Capitals would go on to lose that game by a score of 4-1, but it doesn't matter as the team has since clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference anyways.
On Sunday, Ovechkin scored again in another loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets for career goal number 896, extending his record.
At this point in his career, it feels like just how many goals he can score before retiring is what most Capitals fans are eagerly watching for.
It would certainly be nice if the team wins another Stanley Cup this year, but even if they don't they can rest easy knowing they have the greatest goal scorer of all time.
And if Ovechkin can keep up his scoring pace for a few more years, he very well could hit 1000 career goals, perhaps a record that truly will never be broken.
Either way, the city of Washington DC commemorated Ovechkin's historic career by naming April 11th "Alex Ovechkin Day."
The Capitals made a post to their social media accounts thanking DC's mayor Muriel Bowser for the gesture.
Now Ovechkin's career will be officially celebrated every year long after he retires from the NHL, and that's just the way it ought to be.
