Capitals fans are fuming, as the team's top goaltender, Logan Thompson, was not included as one of the three finalists for the NHL's prestigious Vezina Trophy.
He registered a 2.49 goals-against average (7th best among goaltenders with 25+ games), a .910 save percentage (9th best), and two shutouts.
Most impressively, he was third in goals saved above expected (26.0) behind Hellebuyck (39.6) and Vasilevskiy (29.2). A mid-season team slump put the brakes on his momentum.
Hellebuyck is the favorite to win the Vezina Trophy
Hellebuyck is the prohibitive favorite to be a repeat champion after a masterful season with Winnipeg, where he led the Jets to the Presidents' Trophy on a 47-12-3 record, 2.00 GAA, .925 save percentage, and eight shutouts in 63 games.
Kuemper, sent back to Los Angeles in July, excelled with the Kings, going 31-11-7, 2.02 GAA, .922 save percentage, and five shutouts in 50 games.
Meanwhile, Vasilevskiy racked up 38 wins (second-most in the league), with a 2.18 GAA and .921 save percentage for Tampa Bay.
Ultimately, Thompson's lighter workload, sharing starts with Charlie Lindgren and appearing in fewer games than the other finalists, may have cost him a Vezina chance.
