Alex Ovechkin has had an incredible career on and off the ice for the Washington Capitals, and one impressive tactic has saved him an immense amount of money during that time.
With just 8 goals left to pass Wayne Gretzky's record for the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history, all eyes are on Alex Ovechkin, who is coming to the end of a stellar career, all spent with the Washington Capitals.
Unsurprisingly, over that time he's earned plenty of money, as he has often been one of the highest paid players in the NHL, something that comes with the territory of being arguably the NHL's most exciting player for many, many years.
Now, a recent post on social media has unveiled a shocking detail about that career and that money, with a report showing that Ovechkin has avoided using an agent for the entirety of his NHL career thus far, with the reward for avoiding the 5% agent fee saving him over $8 million throughout that career.
Sure, NHL players aren't quite as well taken care of as players in other sports, but Ovechkin has been highly paid compared to his associates, as his latest contract has earned him almost $48 million over the five-year deal.
That contract is coming to an end after the 2025/26 season, and while he may look to take on another role in hockey or even return to Russia to be highly paid to play the game, saving all of that money is a massive bonus, as he's now much more well off heading into retirement.
All of this on top of the sponsorship and advertisement revenue that he's brought in off the ice, and it's likely that Ovechkin is set for life, and while agents play a crucial role for players in hockey, this just goes to show that they aren't necessarily needed all the time.
