Alex Ovechkin Breaks Another Incredible Record as He Quickly Approaches All-Time NHL Goal Title
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is doing it all these days, breaking yet another NHL record as he quickly approaches Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record.
It's just a matter of time before Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin breaks Wayne Gretzky's
all-time goals record.
Right now, he's at 888 career goals and needs only 6 more to tie Gretzky and 7 to officially overtake him as the new leading goal scorer in National Hockey League history.
1. Wayne Gretzky (894)
2. Alex Ovechkin (888)
3. Gordie Howe (801)
4. Jaromir Jagr (766)
5. Brett Hull (741)
6. Marcel Dionne (731)
7. Phil Esposito (717)
8. Mike Gartner (708)
9. Mark Messier (694)
10. Steve Yzerman (692)
As if that weren't enough, Ovechkin has broken yet another record as he approaches Gretzky's mark. Last Saturday when he scored against the San Jose Sharks for his 887th career goal, it was the 158th time in his career that he's lit the lamp in the month of March.
That's now ahead of Gretzky's all-time mark of 157 goals in a single month (December).
Even more incredible is the fact that Ovechkin missed a month of action after suffering a broken leg in November; since his return to the ice in late December, his 20 goals from that point are 4th most in the NHL behind
Leon Draisaitl (25),
David Pastrnak (22) and
Jason Robertson (22).
Following yesterday's 6-3 win over the Florida Panthers at Capital One Arena, Washington has 12 games left on their schedule before the playoffs begin.
Will Ovechkin tie/break Wayne Gretzky's goals record this year, or will he have to wait until the fall?
