Connor Hellebuyck would still waive his way to Buffalo, and the Sabres' rocky start in net is making that fact harder to ignore.
Elliotte Friedman said as much on NHL Now last night, pointing to a frustrated home crowd after Buffalo was blanked 4-0 by Dallas on Thursday.
Friedman reminded viewers that Buffalo has been connected to Hellebuyck for months.
In his words, "We all know they were pretty close to getting him." He called this a big year for the franchise and wondered how much longer general manager Jarmo Kekalainen can wait.
The Numbers Behind the Urgency
The early returns in goal are troubling. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen carries a .782 save percentage, while Colten Ellis sits at .900, and the Sabres are 2-2-0.
Friedman framed the question simply: if the goaltending does not stabilize, will Buffalo be the club that finally makes the call?

Buffalo hosts Utah on Saturday, another team linked to Hellebuyck, which adds a little extra edge to the evening.
What Stands in the Way
Hellebuyck has been at the center of this saga for weeks. He confirmed his trade request on Aug. 27, did not report to camp on Sept. 16 and was suspended the same day.
Winnipeg also wants a goaltender back in any deal, and Friedman believes Luukkonen has the Jets on his no-trade list, which complicates the most obvious package.
Carolina has also been described as the most motivated pursuer, so Buffalo is not alone. Still, the Sabres are the team with a willing player, a clear need and a growing audience of fans demanding action.

The Sabres entered the season as one of the league's feel-good stories after winning the Atlantic Division and ending an NHL-record playoff drought.
Expectations are high, and a shaky crease threatens to waste a young core that has earned a real push. A trade for Hellebuyck would give them a proven Vezina winner and instantly change the tone around the building.
For now, the player is willing, and the next move belongs to the front offices.
