'Hybrid retool': Canucks GM Allvin facing criticism for comments on future
Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin is facing criticism for his recent comments about going through a 'hybrid retool' rather than a full rebuild.
One of the most monumental trades in Vancouver Canucks history took place earlier in the month, as they traded captain Quinn Hughes, the best defenseman in franchise history, to the Minnesota Wild.
Perhaps even more surprising in addition to them trading Hughes to the Western Conference instead of to an Eastern team that he was linked to was that they managed to win four straight games after the trade.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin is taking some heat from fans when he said that the trade allows them to go into a hybrid-style retool rather than a full rebuild.
We felt the package Minnesota came up with, with younger players and it gave us a chance to take a step back and re-tool a little bit with hybrid form in getting two young twenty(something) players. -Patrik Allvin
Jim Rutherford Spoke About Where Team Owner Francesco Aquilini Believes The Franchise Is At
Not long after the trade, Canucks team president Jim Rutherford spoke to reporters and said that team owner Francesco Aquilini, one of the most maligned owners in the NHL today, said that he understands where the club is at.
(Aquilini) understands where we're at, and of the circumstances. The conversations I've had, he understands.
When we look at where our league is compared to 10 years ago, when it comes to free agency, the players just aren't there. Last summer, one could argue, taught a lesson in that reality. Trades still happen, but the reality that to build out your roster, you need to juice your efforts in the draft. - Jim Rutherford

Right now, the Canucks are on pace to miss the postseason for the second straight year, only two years after winning the Pacific Division and going to Game 7 of the WCSF against the divisional foe Edmonton Oilers.
