Canucks president all but confirms that Quinn Hughes' days in Vancouver are numbered
Quinn Hughes' future in Vancouver has been a major source of speculation lately, and now Jim Rutherford seemingly hints that his time with the Canucks is over.
The Vancouver Canucks were entering 2025/26 hoping for a bounce back campaign, and with a very talented roster, the Stanley Cup Playoffs were clearly an internal goal of the organization.
However, they're 9-12-2 through their first 23 games of the season, and now, according to reports, the team are ready to move on from many veterans ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.
Jim Rutherford comments on the future of captain Quinn Hughes
Dating back to the summer, there's been speculation that the team could end up trading captain Quinn Hughes, and now, President Jim Rutherford has addressed that once again, and this time, he seemingly hints that Hughes' future in the NHL may lay elsewhere.
I believe Quinn and his agent are aware of the direction we want to go. And they're aware of the direction they want to go. Everybody wants to play on a winning team. But there's different reasons why people make decisions.
Obviously, Rutherford isn't going to come straight out and say that they are trading Hughes, but after the reports that the team are looking to move some veterans and head towards a rebuild, this is perhaps another sign that Hughes could be on the way out.
If that is the case, the Canucks are going to get an absolute haul for No. 43, who is considered one of the top two defenseman in the entire National Hockey League, so while nothing is confirmed, the signs all continue pointing towards a Quinn Hughes trade before he hits free agency in the summer of 2027.
