Why John Chayka is the high-risk hire Toronto desperately needs

If John Chayka takes over the front office, his first job is giving Craig Berube a reliable blue line to support Auston Matthews.
The search for the next Maple Leafs architect is down to the wire. Scott White is the safe bet, but Chayka brings massive upside.
He built his reputation by quantifying the sport. Before turning 27, he was already running an NHL front office.
But the baggage is real. He abruptly quit the Arizona Coyotes in 2020 right before the playoff bubble.
Commissioner Gary Bettman suspended him through 2021 for conduct detrimental to the league. He tried taking a promotion with New Jersey Devils ownership while under contract.
Under his watch, the Coyotes also lost a first-round and second-round draft pick. They got caught hosting an illegal private scouting combine.
That kind of history worries traditionalists. Toronto cannot afford another front office distraction.

But MLSE President Keith Pelley wants an evidence-based operation. Chayka finds elite value in the later rounds.
He spots talent before they hit the open market. He prefers controlled entries over blind dump-and-chase hockey.
The current defensive group is aging and trapped in their own end. They need an anchor who can log 25 minutes with solid execution.
Years of trading high picks left the prospect cupboards bare. The franchise desperately needs a creative mind to find cheap entry-level contracts.
If his models show this core has peaked, he will pull the trigger on a major trade. He operates with strict logic.
Toronto is sitting on a clean balance sheet heading into the summer. A fresh start with massive cap space is exactly what he needs.
It is the ultimate high-reward gamble. Toronto just needs to decide if the massive upside outweighs the past drama.
