Toronto's Morgan Rielly trade just got more complicated than it should be

Toronto's plan for replacing Morgan Rielly ran into a snag before any trade even happened.
The Maple Leafs and Rielly's camp are still talking, and insider David Pagnotta says a trade remains the end goal this summer.
One name tied to Toronto's rebuild was Mario Ferraro, a pending free agent defenseman floated as a possible replacement if Rielly moved out west.
Ferraro signed a three-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets on July 1, hours before the latest Rielly update circulated.
A domino fell before the deal did
That signing removed one of the top left-shot defensemen on the open market while Toronto and Rielly's camp were still working through a list of preferred landing spots.
San Jose was reportedly one of those stops, and the Sharks reshaped their own blue line the same day by signing Jacob Trouba instead of keeping Ferraro.
The timing matters more than it looks. Toronto's contingency plan and San Jose's own roster shift both landed on July 1, before Rielly's situation was settled.
What it means for Toronto's next move
If San Jose becomes the landing spot, Rielly would be replacing a player who just left rather than joining a roster still searching for one.
That changes the Sharks' urgency and could shape the return John Chayka is able to command.
Toronto opened July already down one option for life after Rielly. The market moved again before his own situation was resolved.
Rielly's no-movement clause still gives him final say over any deal. The Leafs may have less leverage than the July 1 headlines suggest.
