NHL insider confirms Alex Ovechkin's retirement fate after months of speculation

Tonight, a new report from NHL insider Darren Dreger has confirmed Alex Ovechkin's plans regarding retirement after months and months of speculation.
The Washington Capitals season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion narrowly missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite a valiant effort at the end of the year.
Immediately upon the end of the season, speculation began regarding whether or not Alex Ovechkin would retire.
Heading into his last game, reports were confident he was done and that it would be his final game but Ovechkin said he would take time to mull over the decision.
Now, according to Darren Dreger, Ovechkin is likely expected to announce his retirement in the coming days.

According to Dreger there is a belief around the league that Ovechkin has played his final NHL game and will be retiring.

Ovechkin, 40, has played 21 NHL season amassing an NHL record 929 goals passing Wayne Gretzky during the 2024-25 season while also racking up 1,687 points during his career with the Capitals.
If this is indeed it for Ovechkin he will certainly retire a first ballot Hall of Famer and be remembered as one of the greatest players in the history of the league.
If Ovechkin does retire, it will be interesting to see if he returns to Russia and plays a couple of seasons in the KHL in front of his home fans to end his career overall.
