Mental health is crucial in today's world, and given the pressure on athletes, it's great to see someone like Joseph Woll supporting that with his new initiative.
Playing in the NHL's biggest market in Toronto certainly isn't easy for anyone, and so much pressure on each and every player to be at their best every night makes it even harder, with many players commenting on the stress this put on them during their time there. One player that has dealt with plenty of that, as well as injuries, is Joseph Woll, and now, the 26-year-old goaltender has opened up on a brand new initiative for the 2024/25 season that will see him donate $5000 to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto for every home win the team posts this season.
After announcing the move, Woll opened up to TSN's Mark Masters about this, revealing the motivation behind this amazing initiative from a young man who has not been at the NHL level for a long time.
"Over the past few years I've found how important mental health is & how under-talked about it is sometimes. It's a place that holds a special spot in my heart," as reported by TSN's Mark Masters.
Thankfully for the organization, Woll posted his first win at home this season in his latest start, with the talented goaltender posting a 2.53 GAA and a .902 save percentage in his two starts thus far as he looks to bounce back from injury. Woll is still returning from an injury, and thankfully, it appears he has a very strong mentality as he looks to make his way back into this lineup and eventually the full-time starter role.
"I think now I understand there's things you can control and there's things you can't. Sometimes when you get injuries like that, you can't control much. At the end of the day, I know the work I put in, and I'm confident in that."
While Woll is great on the ice, this initiative shows he's just as great away from the ice, so now even opposing teams and fans may not be that upset if their team loses on the road in Toronto.
