There is breaking news out of Toronto, as the Maple Leafs have announced that goaltender Anthony Stolarz will not be hitting the free agent market next summer.
They have signed him to a new 4 year contract, keeping him signed in Toronto through 2030. Stolarz will earn an AAV (average annual value) of $3.75 million, a $1.25 million raise on the $2.5 million he'll make this year.
The news was confirmed by NHL analyst Chis Johnston, backing up the initial report from former NHL goalie and current analyst Kevin Weekes, who said that the desire for a new contract was mutual between Stolarz and the Maple Leafs.
Per sources, I'm told the @MapleLeafs and G Stolarz have agreed in principle to $15M over 4 Year Contract Extension that's largely signing bonus money . Given the unknown return date for G Woll, this was a mutual priority.
Anthony Stolarz was signed last year after backing up Sergei Bobrovsky to the Stanley Cup in Florida
Stolarz backed up Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky during what was the 1st of consecutive Stanley Cups for Florida; he signed a 2 year deal with the Maple Leafs just weeks later.
Stolarz had an impressive 1st year in Toronto, going 21-8-3 with a .926 SV% and 4 shutouts. He also was in goal for what was just the 2nd Maple Leafs playoff series win in 21 years, a 6 game victory over the divisional foe Ottawa Senators in the ECQF.
