Maple Leafs reveal their plans to move on from the core four
Today the Toronto Maple Leafs front office spoke to the media. One insider believes their comments have indicated a firm plan to move on from their current core four.
The Toronto Maple Leafs' entire plan to compete has been centered around Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner. After another first-round exit, many have wanted at least one of these players traded. According to NHL insider Chris Johnston fans might be getting their wish soon.
Without saying it explicitly, the #leafs leadership/management couldn't have made it more clear reading between the lines that they're going to explore moving one or more members of their core this summer.
While talks have mostly been centered around Mitch Marner being shipped out of town it sounds as though multiple members of the core four could be sent packing. If this is the case the Toronto Maple Leafs would be employing an entirely new philosophy toward winning.
Brendan Shanahan asked specifically about John Tavares and Mitch Marner's situation, doesn't answer directly saying it'd be premature but also adding that everything is on the table.
With everything on the table, many fans are hoping the Maple Leafs take a more balanced approach to their lineup next season. This would involve trading for or signing another top defenseman or two and letting some of the offensive firepower in the core four go instead.
At the moment all of this is just rumors and speculation. As the rumors turn into actual moves we will keep you updated on all the latest trades and signings as the Maple Leafs enter a new era.
