Maple Leafs reportedly targeting Calgary Flames defenseman

The Toronto Maple Leafs could be circling a veteran defenseman as the early trade market starts to take shape.
According to David Pagnotta on Daily Faceoff Live, Calgary Flames blueliner Zach Whitecloud is a name Toronto may pursue, and the interest around the league appears to be real.
Pagnotta referenced his earlier reporting on the subject and made it clear the Leafs would face competition for the 29-year-old.
I mentioned...Toronto being a team that's looking at that type of defenseman; wouldn't surprise me at all if they escalate those conversations with Calgary; they won't be the only ones.
Why Whitecloud Makes Sense
Whitecloud is a right-shot defender who landed in Calgary in the January trade that sent Rasmus Andersson to Vegas. His $2.75 million cap hit is easy to fit onto a contender's books, and his résumé is hard to ignore.
He won a Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights in 2023 and has recorded at least 117 hits in three consecutive seasons, giving him a physical, experienced profile that suits a playoff-minded roster.
For Toronto, a steady right-side option could add depth and ease the workload on the current top four.
Pagnotta also noted that teams began calling Calgary about Whitecloud as soon as the Andersson deal was done, which shows how widely he is viewed as a useful piece.
Calgary Holds the Leverage
The Flames have started the season 0-3-0 and have been outscored 16-3, but there is no sign of panic in the front office.
Whitecloud was added to the leadership group before opening night, and reports suggest general manager Craig Conroy is in no rush to deal him.
Calgary also has a crowded blue line, which gives the club flexibility to wait for the right offer rather than sell at a discount.
That puts the onus on Toronto and any other suitors to present a package that clearly outweighs Whitecloud's value to a rebuilding team.
If the Leafs decide he is the answer, they will likely need to outbid other clubs, and the conversations Pagnotta described could heat up quickly.
