Avalanche place promising goaltender on waivers despite impressive stats

The Colorado Avalanche have placed goaltender Trent Miner on waivers, a move that looks surprising given how well he played in limited NHL action last season.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported the transaction Saturday, and teams have until 1 PM CT on Sunday to place a claim.
The 25-year-old netminder posted a 1-0-3 record with a .933 save percentage and a 2.03 goals-against average in four NHL appearances during 2025-26.
Those are numbers that normally earn a goalie a longer look, not a spot on the waiver wire.
Why Colorado Is Making This Move
The explanation is procedural. Miner cleared waivers on Sept. 28 and was reassigned to the AHL, but he started the 2026-27 season on the injured non-roster list because of an undisclosed injury.
Now that he has recovered, Colorado must run him through waivers again before sending him to AHL Colorado.
Contract status also plays a role. Miner is in the final season of a two-year, two-way contract, and he sits behind the Avalanche's top goaltenders on the depth chart.
That role has not changed, and one strong stretch does not guarantee a roster spot.
Could Another Team Take a Chance?
Four games is a small sample, and Miner's AHL results last season were more modest, with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage over 32 appearances.
Still, a young goalie with strong NHL numbers on an expiring contract could interest a club dealing with injuries or searching for a reliable third option.

If no team claims him, Miner is expected to join the Eagles and compete for starts, staying one injury away from another NHL call-up.
His waiver status will be settled within a day, and the outcome could say a lot about how the league values a goalie who produced when given the chance.
For Colorado, losing a depth piece would be manageable. For Miner, the next 24 hours will determine whether his next opportunity comes in the Rocky Mountains or somewhere new.
