'I've heard rumblings': Jason Gregor believes rift may be growing between Matthews and Leafs

Last season, the Toronto Maple Leafs made Auston Matthews their latest captain, forcing John Tavares to step down as they looked to shake things up under new Head Coach Craig Berube.

Unfortunately, that didn't change much, and in 2025/26 after the departure of Mitch Marner, things have gotten worse for this team as they currently sit in 8th position in the hotly contested Atlantic Division.

This combined with the injuries that Auston Matthews has been dealing with has led to some speculation over his future, with many believing that No. 34 may not see out the two years remaining on his deal after this season.

Now, that's been amplified by Edmonton Oilers reporter Jason Gregor, who has stated that there may be a major rift growing between the captain and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As of right now, there's been no indication from the teams perspective that a potential trade or trade talks could begin, but if Matthews continues getting frustrated with the direction things are headed in, there's a chance that he may not see out the four-year extension that he signed ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Ultimately, this is a player that can change a franchise, and if Matthews' frustration grows to the point of wanting out, there's a good chance that could happen, but for now, this is a major story to keep an eye on as Toronto look to turn their slow start to the season around.
