Insider reveals Mitch Marner is still upset over one thing the Leafs did that rubbed him the wrong way

Marner did receive a signing bonus on his 2015 entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, roughly $92,000, and he took the maximum $850,000 in Schedule A bonuses.

What he did not receive was Schedule B money.

That distinction matters. Schedule B is discretionary, and it is the one line on a rookie deal where a club writes down, in dollars, how highly it ranks a prospect.

Agent Darren Ferris laid out the rest on the PuckPedia Hockey Show. Lou Lamoriello told the Marner side no rookie would get Schedule B bonuses, then gave Auston Matthews $2.85 million in performance bonuses a year later.

Ferris put it plainly: a promise that is not in the contract is not a promise, it is a tactic.

That is the mechanism behind a grudge this old. Marner learned at 18 that a Toronto assurance carried no enforcement.

Every negotiation after that was built to strip out the club's discretion. In 2019 he sat out into training camp and refused to move far off Matthews' number before signing for six years and $65.4 million.

The 2025 departure follows the same logic. Marner held a full no-move clause and used it, controlling the process rather than trusting Toronto to handle his market.

He signed eight years at $96 million, then went to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nicolas Roy, per NHL.com.

Study the structure. Per PuckPedia, $11 million of his first-year money arrives as a signing bonus, guaranteed and paid up front.

Nothing verbal, nothing discretionary, nothing left to trust.

Marner posted 80 points in 81 games in his first Vegas season.

The bonus was never the wound, the broken word was.
