Zach Hyman's praise for Caleb Malhotra lands differently once you know he owns the Ontario Hockey League club Malhotra left after one season.

Hyman and his family purchased the Brantford Bulldogs from Michael Andlauer in January 2025, with his brother Spencer now running the club as general manager.
Malhotra spent 2025-26 in Brantford, posting 84 points in 67 games before adding 26 more in the playoffs.
Then he left for Boston University, and Hyman still called him an unbelievable kid heading into Canada's World Junior Summer Showcase.
"Unbelievable kid. You'll enjoy getting to know him at that camp ... Manny did a great job raising him."

That camp runs through August 1 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario.
This is an owner publicly blessing the departure of his own franchise's best draft asset.

Why the timeline says something different

Hyman told TSN he expects to see Malhotra in the National Hockey League pretty soon.
Hyman's own career is the counterargument. The Florida Panthers drafted him 123rd overall in 2010, he played four years at the University of Michigan, and he did not make his NHL debut until February 2016.
That is five and a half years from draft floor to NHL ice, on the exact route Malhotra is now taking.

What Vancouver actually gains here

The Vancouver Canucks selected Malhotra third overall in June, and general manager Ryan Johnson is rebuilding without urgency.
Head coach Manny Malhotra, Caleb's father, spent four seasons on the Toronto Maple Leafs staff beginning in 2020-21, Hyman's final year in Toronto.
That is how Hyman knows this family well enough to vouch for the upbringing rather than the shot.
Boston University buys Vancouver time it wants anyway, and college rights rules keep Malhotra in the fold far longer than an entry-level clock would.
Hyman is not predicting a shortcut.
He is endorsing the long road he walked himself.
