Easton Cowan has shown flashes in his rookie year with the Maple Leafs, but now Head Coach Craig Berube has revealed the reason why he's being scratched.

Back in the 2023 NHL Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs used their first-round pick on Easton Cowan, and to this point, he's profiled as a potential superstar of the future for the organization.
In 2025/26, he's finally gotten his opportunity in the NHL at the age of 20, and across four games, he's been solid without being spectacular, tallying one assist while having a +2 differential.

Craig Berube Reveals Why Cowan Has Been Healthy Scratched

However, there's still plenty of work to be done before he becomes a finish product, and after revealing that he'll be a healthy scratch for the teams next game against the New Jersey Devils, Head Coach Craig Berube has revealed the reason behind the move.
He needs a reset, get a game to watch. It's always good for young guys to watch a game at some point. But Cowan's in a good spot.
On paper, it may be a move that frustrates Maple Leafs fans, but very few rookies come in and dominate the league from game one, so giving Cowan a different vantage point and a way to learn isn't the worst way to go about things.
It's more likely than not that this will be a short thing for Cowan, as he has shown the ability to be a top-nine forward in Toronto, so while it may be frustrating for now, don't be surprised to see Cowan back in the lineup quickly as the Maple Leafs look to continue his development.
