Per a new report from NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs were interested in acquiring Brayden Schenn from the St. Louis Blues last year, but there was one specific reason why the deal fell apart.

Even though it ended up being another disappointing end to their season, the Toronto Maple Leafs did make multiple additions to their team, acquiring Brandon Carlo from the divisional foe Boston Bruins and also acquiring Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers.
They were also linked to St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn per a new report from NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman, but there was one particular reason why the reported deal never went through.
Per Friedman, Brayden Schenn wouldn't waive his no-trade clause clause to join the Maple Leafs unless they re-acquired his brother Luke Schenn as well.
I absolutely think that was the package that was on the table that was going to have to get it done for Schenn. Nick is totally right that that was what it was going to take to get him.

Schenn wasn't going to waive to Toronto unless the Maple Leafs got Luke. When all that was going on about reuniting the Schenn brothers, that's what Toronto was trying to do, and if the Leafs had gotten Luke, I think Brayden would've waived to go there. - Elliotte Friedman
Both Schenn brothers ended up playing against one another in the Western Conference Quarterfinal last year, which Luke and the Winnipeg Jets won in seven games over Brayden and the Blues.

St. Louis Blues Captain Brayden Schenn Is Back On The Trade Block

Schenn and the Blues are struggling this year, and there could be multiple pieces that are soon sold off.
Schenn is one of the players who has been most heavily talked about in trade rumours; he has two years left beyond this season on his contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $6,500,000.
So far this year, Schenn has 18 points (9G, 9A) in 46 games.
