The Simon Edvinsson saga in Detroit is dragging on, and one bold mock trade could finally settle it.

Under this proposal, the Montreal Canadiens would land the 6-foot-6 defenseman, while the Detroit Red Wings would receive Kirby Dach, Oliver Kapanen, Adam Engstrom, a 2027 first-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick.

Why Montreal Makes the Move

Edvinsson has made it clear he would rather be traded than sign an extension, and Detroit has not been able to change his mind. That gives Montreal a rare chance to add a young, elite-pedigree defenseman picked sixth overall in 2021.
The Canadiens have the forward depth and the draft capital to pay the price without touching their core, and Edvinsson would instantly raise the ceiling of their blue line.

What Detroit Gets in Return

Jeff Marek reported that the Red Wings want players back rather than picks and prospects, and this offer leans on players before adding two firsts.
Dach brings size down the middle, Kapanen is a young forward who can step into the lineup, and Engstrom adds defensive depth to soften the blow of losing Edvinsson.
The two first-round picks also give interim general manager Shawn Horcoff extra flexibility as he navigates the Dylan Larkin situation.
There are risks for Montreal. Dach has dealt with injuries throughout his career, and giving up two first-round picks plus three players is a steep price for a player who is still a restricted free agent.
Montreal would also need to get Edvinsson signed long term, ideally before the deal is finalized. Still, a defenseman of this caliber rarely becomes available, and the Canadiens have been connected to Detroit this fall.
Would Detroit say yes? This is a haul most teams would consider, and Montreal gets a franchise-level piece in return.
If the Red Wings truly believe the relationship is beyond repair, an offer like this could justify turning the page and restocking the roster for a push this season. The Canadiens would be paying a premium, but few trades offer this much upside.
