Ben Danford's NHL debut blocked by bizarre rule

Maple Leafs fans have spent days asking for Ben Danford to make his NHL debut as injuries drain the blue line.
The 2024 first-round pick has looked sharp with the Marlies, and he would bring the youth and mobility many supporters crave.
A promotion feels like a matter of when. Right now, though, the decision is not entirely in Toronto's hands. A salary-cap mechanism is standing in the way.
How the tagging rules block the call-up
Tagging is a CBA tool that limits how much a team can add to its future-year payroll commitments. Toronto has only about $625,000 of that room left for 2027-28.
Danford's entry-level contract carries a $936,056 figure for that season, and because he is on a two-way deal, bringing him up would push the Leafs over the line unless they clear money first.
The squeeze is partly self-inflicted. Toronto handed out several two- and three-year contracts to depth forwards on July 1, and the Kirill Marchenko extension added even more weight to 2027-28.
Those commitments made the Marchenko and Matthew Knies swap harder to complete, and Emil Andrae was added to help balance the books.
Taking on Elvis Merzlikins, whose contract expires after this season, was another way to create breathing room.
What Toronto can do about it
Head coach Jim Hiller has said the club likes its current options and believes more AHL time suits Danford's development, which is why Dakota Mermis and Cole McWard received the recent recalls. With the rule in place, that debate is moot for now.
The fix is straightforward on paper. GM John Chayka needs to move a contract that runs through 2027-28, which would reopen enough space to promote Danford or make other additions.
Until that happens, the 20-year-old stays in the AHL by necessity, not by choice. Once the money is cleared, a debut could come quickly, and with the defense banged up, Leafs Nation will be watching closely.
That leaves Chayka with a clear to-do item before the next wave of injuries arrives.
