Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin has no plans to chase Quinn Hughes with a desperate sales pitch.

Asked about the star defenseman's uncertain future, Guerin shut down the idea that a public courtship is coming.
There's nothing to talk about right now. What am I going to do, say ‘Please, please, please?'
The line lands with weight because of what Minnesota invested. The Wild acquired Hughes from Vancouver on December 12, 2025, sending Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium and a first-round pick west.
He is now playing out the last season of a contract worth $7.85 million per year, and unrestricted free agency arrives July 1, 2027.

Guerin Admits He Does Not Know What Happens Next

Pressed on his timeline, Guerin offered even less certainty, though he left no doubt about his preference.
I haven't really decided, at some point in time I'll have to try to figure things out and see what's best for the team. I know one thing's for sure: having Quinn on our team is what's best for the team. And, you know, I don't know. I'll be completely honest with you, I don't know. I don't know what's going to happen. I don't know what I'm going to do. There's no date. What we're doing right now is focusing on our team and trying to win hockey games. That's really it. I think some people want to make this more complicated than it really is, being the media. And it's not that complicated.

Guerin's message is clear on one front. Hughes is central to the plan, and the Wild want him on the roster beyond this season. Everything else, including timing and terms, remains unsettled.

Why the Pressure Keeps Building for Minnesota

Hughes has not told the Wild he will leave, and he has not promised to stay.
That uncertainty gives his camp enormous leverage, especially with Cale Makar's $20.4 million average annual value now setting the benchmark for defensemen.
Guerin cannot control that market, and his refusal to publicly beg suggests he knows it well.
