Auston Matthews and head coach Craig Berube are facing a brutal reality check in Toronto right now.

Missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs entirely is an unacceptable failure for a franchise operating with maximum cap constraints. The noise surrounding the locker room is growing louder as the regular season reaches a miserable conclusion.
Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper decided to unexpectedly weigh in on the Maple Leafs on Monday.
Cooper publicly stated that Toronto still has a fabulous core and labeled this complete collapse as a simple one-off. It is a fascinating quote coming from a direct rival who built a dynasty.
Young winger Matthew Knies was quick to agree with Cooper, boldly promising the team will return stronger than ever.
But the real story is how the captain addressed the local media regarding this massive disappointment.

Auston Matthews Points To Recent History

Matthews directly referenced Tampa Bay missing the 2016-17 postseason despite finishing with a solid 94 points. He accurately noted that the Lightning rebounded to win the division the very next year.
The elite sniper also pointed to the Boston Bruins experiencing a recent down year before immediately jumping right back into the mix.
Shrugging off a wasted 82-game schedule with a casual 'sometimes it happens' is an incredibly risky public relations move.
Diehard fans in Toronto are completely exhausted by moral victories and historical comparisons. Matthews carries a massive $13.25 million cap hit to deliver deep playoff runs, not excuses.
His individual offensive output remains elite, but the overall team execution was awful. The penalty kill was a disaster and the transition game repeatedly stalled out at the red line.
Management faces a brutal summer trying to navigate the hard salary cap to fix a clearly broken blue line.
They simply cannot afford to waste another prime season of their heavily compensated superstar forwards.
If this truly is just a one-off, the front office has to prove it with major roster adjustments before puck drop next October.
