Analytics suggest Maple Leafs may have made a big mistake sending Easton Cowan to the AHL

The latest analytical numbers suggest that the Toronto Maple Leafs may have made an error in judgment by sending forward Easton Cowan to the AHL.
There isn't a whole lot going right for the Toronto Maple Leafs right now, who lost 5-3 last night to the divisional foe Boston Bruins and slipped even further back in the Atlantic Division standings.
Before they lost to the Bruins, they made a difficult roster decision by sending down forward Easton Cowan to the American Hockey League affiliate Toronto Marlies.
But based on the raw analytical data of Cowan's performance with the Leafs so far, Toronto may have made a mistake.
The fact that Easton Cowan is in the AHL is shocking if you dive into numbers and playdriving.
Among 11 Leafs forwards with 100+ minutes of ice time this season, here is where he ranks at Even Strength:
- 52.38 CF% - 1st / 2.15% above anybody else
- 58.10 SCF% - 1st / 4.70% above anybody else
- 59.46 HDCF% - 1st / 6.05% above anybody else
- 10.00 on-ice SH% - 3rd worst
- 44.44 OZS% - 3rd worst usage
Coach loves him for a reason. No reason for AHL.
Cowan, who was taken by the Maple Leafs with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, had four points (1G, 3A) in the 10 games he played.
Could Easton Cowan Immediately Be Brought Back Up To The Maple Leafs?
It wouldn't be long before the Maple Leafs ruled Matthews out for the rest of the game.
If Matthews is hurt and has to miss an extended period of time, don't be surprised to see Cowan right back up on his way to Toronto.
