Artemi Panarin is now a Los Angeles King, but according to reports, it was actually the Seattle Kraken that offered him the biggest extension.
With the Olympic break now upon us, many expected some shock trades to happen before the roster freeze, and on Wednesday, we got just that when Artemi Panarin was traded to the Los Angeles Kings.
The move came as a result of Panarin only waiving his no movement clause to go to Los Angeles, with the team then handing him a two-year, $11 million AAV extension, keeping him with the Kings until he's 36-years of age.
Seattle's massive offer to Panarin revealed
Before he was dealt, reports revealed that Panarin only wanted to be traded if an extension was involved, and at $22 million, the deal he got from Los Angeles was a very attractive one.
However, it has now been reported that it was nowhere near the biggest offer on the table, with a report from Elliotte Friedman now revealing that the Seattle Kraken offered Panarin a four-year deal with an AAV higher than Leon Draisaitl's ($14 million AAV) current deal with the Edmonton Oilers.
On paper, this is clearly a much more attractive offer long-term, but after playing in both Chicago and New York, Panarin clearly has a thing for big cities in the United States, and while Seattle is an attractive place, the team and the environment in Los Angeles was just clearly more enticing to Panarin.
Ultimately, turning down a four-year deal worth nearly $60 million could end up backfiring in a big way for Panarin, but with LA set up for success in the near future, it's easy to see why he would prefer that to the Kraken.
