The Kraken are ready to move Jared McCann and several teams are interested

The Seattle Kraken are testing the market on Jared McCann again, but the timing points to roster math rather than a rebuild.
Jason Botterill spent June rebuilding the exact archetype McCann occupies. That context changes how this report should be read.
The Fourth Period reported the Kraken are once again gauging interest in the 30-year-old forward.
On June 21, Seattle signed Bobby McMann to a six-year extension carrying a $5.75 million cap hit.
Hours earlier, the Kraken sent a first-round pick and a conditional second to the Florida Panthers for 23-year-old Mackie Samoskevich.
Both moves added scoring wingers. Neither move added cap flexibility.
The contract nobody is reading closely
McCann has one season left on the five-year, $25 million deal he signed in 2022, per PuckPedia. He becomes an unrestricted free agent in July 2027.
That makes him the only top-six scorer in Seattle without term beyond next season. Every other forward Botterill added this summer is signed well past it.
McCann also carries a 10-team no-trade list, which narrows the field before talks even begin.
Why the return may be smaller than fans expect
Injuries limited McCann to 52 games last season, and he finished with 20 goals and 40 points. Captain Jordan Eberle led the Kraken in scoring with 52.
Seattle finished 34-35-11 and stumbled to a 7-14-2 close after holding a playoff spot on deadline day in March.
Rival executives can read all of that. A 30-year-old on an expiring contract, coming off an injury-shortened year, playing for a team that just paid someone else to do his job, does not command a first-round pick.
For contending teams, that is the useful signal. A seller motivated by its own cap sheet is far easier to negotiate with than one chasing a headline return.
The Kraken are not shopping a bargain.
They are clearing a lane for the players they already committed to.
