Journeyman NHL goaltender officially calls it a career and retires

One year of that career explains why the other ten happened at all.

Here is the number nobody has run. Hutchinson played 154 NHL games, and 38 of them came in 2014-15.

That leaves 116 appearances across his other ten seasons, from career totals of 57-62-18 and a .902 save percentage.

The Winnipeg Jets announced the retirement Monday, and the NHL Alumni Association traced a path that touched six franchises.

In 2014-15, Hutchinson went 21-10-5 with a .914 save percentage behind Ondrej Pavelec, and the Winnipeg Jets reached the playoffs for the first time since relocating from Atlanta.

He finished eighth in Calder Trophy voting, per Daily Faceoff. Nothing he did afterward came close.

Pro Hockey Rumors described everything after Winnipeg as spot duty, usually one to 15 NHL starts a season.

The Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings all employed him anyway. Goaltending is the only position where one strong sample can fund a decade of employment.

The Boston Bruins drafted him 77th overall in 2008 and never gave him an NHL start. His first career win, on April 10, 2014, came against them.

Boston did not tender him in 2013, and he signed with Winnipeg, then climbed from the ECHL to the NHL inside one season.

That is the quiet lesson for teams scouting goalies this summer.

Development curves at the position ignore draft slots, and the payoff often lands in another organization's building.

Hutchinson closed with 30 appearances for Toronto, one final NHL game with Detroit in 2023-24 and a year with SaiPa in Finland's Liiga.
