Sharks place $16 million defenseman on waivers

The San Jose Sharks are easily the most exciting young team in the National Hockey League, and given all of their young stars, it's easy to see why fans around the league are so excited about this team moving forward.

While the team is focused on the likes of Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini, they do have some key veterans playing good roles for them, but unfortunately, one of those players has now been placed on waivers.

On Sunday, it was announced that 34-year old Nick Leddy, in the final year of a four-year, $4 million AAV deal originally signed with the St. Louis Blues will be placed on waivers by the team.

The former first-round pick was originally acquired by the Sharks on waivers this past off-season, and now, it appears as though they are prepared to lose him in the exact same manner.

In 19 games played this season, Leddy has tallied 4 assists along with a -9 differential, and while the Sharks have found some success, he just hasn't managed to be a consistent part of this lineup.

Ultimately, Leddy once would have been a key piece of this blue line as the team look to build for the future around their rising stars, but given the lack of production and the hefty $4 million price tag that comes with keeping him, this is the smart move from San Jose, with teams around the league potentially set to claim the 34-year old.
