Sidney Crosby opens up on his next contract with the Penguins, admitting he wants to keep playing but does not know for how long.

Sidney Crosby just gave Penguins fans the most Crosby answer possible about his future.
Speaking to reporters today, the Pittsburgh captain made clear he still wants to keep playing for years to come.
He just cannot put a number on it yet.
"I'd like to continue playing for a number of years. It's just, I don't know what that number is."

Crosby is entering the final season of the two year, $17.4 million extension he signed back in 2024, and the calendar is starting to push the conversation about what comes next.
At 39 years old and about to begin his 22nd season in Pittsburgh, Crosby is not sounding like a guy plotting his exit.
Reports out of Pittsburgh suggest a new deal could come together before puck drop, likely another modest one or two year bridge with the only organization he has ever known.
His agent Pat Brisson has reportedly been in touch with general manager Kyle Dubas about timing, and nobody involved seems to be treating this as a real negotiation.

Why the number matters so much

Crosby is not chasing term or dollars the way most stars in his position would.
He has openly said he is trying to figure out how his body will feel down the road, which makes locking in a long term number nearly impossible for him.
He still put up 74 points in 68 games last season, numbers most players half his age would take in a heartbeat.

What comes next for Pittsburgh

With Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang still around too, the Penguins core keeps aging together instead of splitting apart.
Crosby has shut down trade speculation repeatedly, insisting he has zero interest in finishing his career anywhere else.
For a fan base that spent years bracing for a rebuild, hearing their captain talk about years plural is exactly the update they wanted heading into camp.
