Bruins GM Don Sweeney hands out massive $50.4 million contract to young forward

The Boston Bruins have locked up one of their most promising young forwards.

According to Frank Seravalli, Fraser Minten has signed a seven-year contract extension worth $50.4 million, carrying a $7.2 million average annual value.

The deal keeps him in Boston through the 2033-34 season.

Minten arrived in Boston via the 2025 trade deadline, sent over from Toronto as part of the return for Brandon Carlo.

He was originally a second-round pick by the Maple Leafs in 2022, going 38th overall before being flipped to Boston three years later.

He wasted little time proving he belonged in the middle of Boston's lineup.

Playing all 82 games last season, Minten posted 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points while carrying a plus-21 rating, numbers that were good enough to land him NESN's Seventh Player Award and a top-ten finish in Calder Trophy voting.

The extension comes just ahead of a key date on the NHL calendar.

Under the new collective bargaining agreement taking effect later this month, teams re-signing their own players will only be able to offer a maximum of seven years, down from eight.

Locking Minten in now, right at that new ceiling, gives Boston the longest term still available and buys itself cost certainty on a center it clearly views as part of its long-term core.

At just 22 years old, Minten still has plenty of runway.

He capped his breakout season with a strong showing for Team Canada at the World Championship, further boosting his stock around the league.

For a Bruins team leaning on younger pieces down the middle, locking up Minten well before he hit restricted free agency looks like a move general manager Don Sweeney will be glad he made early.
