In the eyes of NHL analyst Tony Marinaro, the Pittsburgh Penguins will have no choice but to trade Sidney Crosby if they're out of the playoff race in March by the time the NHL Trade Deadline comes around.
After a big start to the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins have fallen back down to Earth in a major way, having lost eight straight games.
Six of those consecutive losses were on home ice, which is now the worst homestand in team history.
Some of the major speculations surrounding captain and franchise icon Sidney Crosby are his future with the team, and that future will be further and further in doubt if the Penguins fall further out of the playoff race.
Per NHL analyst Tony Marinaro, the Penguins will have no choice but to trade Crosby at the Trade Deadline if they're out of the playoff race in March, and even lists the Montreal Canadiens as a potential team he could join.
"Where there's smoke, there's fire. I know a gentleman very close to Crosby and his people, and about a year and a half ago, he pulled me aside, and he said to me, 'Don't be surprised; Sidney Crosby finishes his career with the Montreal Canadiens. "The only chance it becomes another possibility again, is once again if they don't make the playoffs. So if they're out of a playoff spot come trade deadline, and teams have got better and they're on a downward spiral, I bet the house that he's going to get traded. I bet the house. - Tony Marinaro
Crosby grew up rooting for the Canadiens as a child; he's also been linked to the Colorado Avalanche, who have his good friend Nathan MacKinnon.
Sidney Crosby's Future With The Pittsburgh Penguins Is In Doubt
Crosby did recently agree to a two-year contract with his traditional AAV (average annual value) of $8.7 million, a clear superstitious nod to his famous sweater number.
It's an incredibly team-friendly deal considering he could be making far more elsewhere.
Crosby has been known for his loyalty to the Penguins, but when push comes to shove, he could decide that the lure of winning one more Stanley Cup is more important than staying with a team that has no chance to raise the iconic trophy any time soon.
