Philip Tomasino has flashed plenty of potential in the NHL, but after struggling to catch on in Pittsburgh, he's now been waived by the Penguins.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have taken a chance on several former first-round picks in recent times, and some of those moves have paid off in a big way, while others have fallen flat.
One person that falls into the category of the latter is former Nashville Predator Philip Tomasino, who has appeared in nine games with the team this season, but with just one assist in that time, it's safe to say he's been rather disappointing.
Pittsburgh Penguins waive Philip Tomasino
Now, they've officially made their decision on the former first-round pick, as Elliotte Friedman revealed on social media that he has officially been
placed on waivers alongside Maxence Guenette from the Philadelphia Flyers.
This comes after Tomasino had 11 goals and 23 points in 50 games for the Penguins a season ago, but with other players like
Justin Brazeau and
Anthony Mantha stepping up this season, there just isn't a role for him in the NHL as of right now.
Across 218 career games, the 24-year old has 34 goals and 95 points, showing that he can potentially be an every day NHLer moving forward, with Pittsburgh likely hoping that he can pass through waivers to provide them depth down in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Ultimately, there's still a potential NHLer in Tomasino, but after the Predators gave up on him and now he's been placed on waivers, it's safe to say that he's going to have a tough time finding a full-time role in the league moving forward.
