The Pittsburgh Penguins are in first place in the NHL, which they haven't achieved since 2016, and Bryan Rust is a big part of the reason behind their hot start.

Even though the Pittsburgh Penguins were near universally picked by most fans and analysts to come nowhere close to making the playoffs, they have silenced their doubters with a hot start.
The Penguins beat the Minnesota Wild 6-3 on Thursday and are now 8-2-2 through 12 games, and are in the top place in the NHL for the first time since December of 2016, which was also their last Stanley Cup-winning year.
Forward Bryan Rust, who was involved in multiple trade rumours leading up to this year, said they're not trying to look too far ahead but are having fun with their hot start.
<>q>We're taking each day as it comes. I don't think we're trying to get too far ahead of ourselves and I think we're having a lot of fun with it. The good and the bad. Trying to learn from the bad, learn from the good too. I think we're just trying to have as much fun as possible.

Bryan Rust Gives Props To Rookie Ben Kindel

The Penguins have also been bolstered by rookie Ben Kindel, who already has three goals in 10 games.
Rust called Kindel's contributions to the Penguins "awesome".
He's been awesome. To come in here as an 18-year-old kid and be able to do it, he's doing it. To have the high character and the ability to play the way that he has, I think it is extremely special. There is no moment that seems to be too big for him.

The Penguins have missed the playoffs in each of the last three years, which is the longest drought in the careers of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.
If they continue this hot start, the longtime Penguisn trio could have one last kick at the can with one another.
