NHL Analyst Elliotte Friedman Hints at Massive Cale Makar Extension
NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman has hinted that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar could get a new contract at a near equal value to Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprisov.
Colorado Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland has already re-signed forward Martin Necas after months of speculation that he wasn't happy in Colorado after his acquisition from the Carolina Hurricanes in the surprising Mikko Rantanen trade.
Necas's new contract carries an AAV (average annual value) of $11.5 million.
But it won't be long before MacFarland will have a far more meaningful contract to take care of, as multi-Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Cale Makar is only signed through 2027.
Per a new report from NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast, the Avalanche could sign Makar to a new deal of near equal value to Kirill Kaprizov of the divisional foe Minnesota Wild.
This whole thing that Colorado had to do was about Makar. Every negotiation they have now is about where and what the number is going to be, and they can start negotiating with him this offseason.
«If you're the Avalanche right now, and you get him to come in a penny under Kaprizov, you are considering it a (win), and not just a little (win), a massive (win). And let me just say this: I don't know what Makar wants. I don't know what he's thinking. He's probably just thinking the business will take care of itself.

Kaprizov is now signed to the highest AAV in NHL history at $17 million.
So far this year, Makar has 15 points (3G, 12A).
Cale Makar Has Broken Out As One Of The NHL's Best Defensemen
Makar has already established himself as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, having been nominated as a finalist for the Norris Trophy in five of his opening six years in the NHL, and he's now won twice.
He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the postseason in 2022 during Colorado's Stanley Cup win.
