Antoine Roussel has called out a teenager for wanting to leave the QMJHL for the USHL, and now, he's received plenty of backlash as a result.
In recent times, things have changed for the CHL and USA junior leagues, with plenty of players now shifting between the WHL, OHL and QMJHL to leagues in the United States such as the college ranks or the USHL.
Unsurprisingly, that's caused plenty of frustration within the Canadian ranks, with the team losing top stars like Gavin McKenna to the NCAA as they look to find stability for their own leagues.
Antoine Roussel Getting Major Backlash For Comments On A Teenage Player
Now, Nathan Lecompte of the Chicoutimi Saguenéens appears headed for the USHL, with former NHLer Antoine Roussel
protesting the move, stating that he would force the player to stay and make his life hard.
I have a lot of trouble with this. I see people working extremely hard to fill the arena. Business people doing it voluntarily because the Sags are a non-profit organization. It's been 10 years since the Sags have had a big year.
This season, they were expected to have a big year. Why do you decide to abandon ship when you have a team expected to at least reach the semifinals, maybe even the Memorial Cup? I would have loved that, to have had the chance to play for a winning team in junior.
I wouldn't release that player. The QMJHL needs to make an example of him and make life difficult for him.
It's certainly understandable to be frustrated given the role that Roussel plays, but stating that he wants to make a teenagers life difficult is a step too far, with plenty taking to social media to call him out.
Controversial official Tim Peel stepped in as well, supporting Colby Cohen's statement, with no one seemingly surprised that Roussel is acting this way towards a teenager.
Ultimately, teenagers are going to make decisions that they believe are best for them, and whether it's the right call or not, Roussel's comments were ridiculous, and he deserves to be called out for it.
