Travis Green did not just say he was mad about Brady Tkachuk's trade request. He said when he found out, and that timing is the story.

Speaking on the 100% Hockey podcast with John Shannon and Darren Millard, the Ottawa Senators head coach said Steve Staios brought him up to speed roughly three or four weeks after the season ended.
Staios has already said publicly that Tkachuk asked to be moved about 10 days after Ottawa's season finished.
Line those two timelines up and the head coach spent close to two weeks running an offseason he did not have full information about.
"A little bit surprised, a little bit mad."

The words Green chose are the real message

Green said he waited until the trade was complete before calling Tkachuk, describing the process as something between the agent, Staios and the player. That is a coach placing himself outside the room where his captain's exit was decided.
Then came the inventory. Green said the Senators lost a good player and gained a couple of good players, singling out William Eklund as a real good young player.
Tkachuk led Ottawa with 213 goals and 463 points across eight seasons. Calling that a good player while saving the warmer adjective for the 23-year-old who replaced him is not accidental phrasing.

Why the shot lands harder than it sounds

Green also listed eight young Senators he expects to improve, from Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson to Ridly Greig and Tyler Kleven. He never named a leadership replacement, which is the one job Tkachuk actually held.
Ottawa went 12-5-5 without Tkachuk last season, a number Green knows better than anyone.
His calm delivery carried a pointed argument underneath it: this group already proved it functions without him, and the coach was told late that the arrangement had become permanent.
