St. Louis looked like the natural Tkachuk landing spot because of his family connection to the city.
His reported resistance stripped away the storyline and likely weakened Ottawa's bidding tension.
That is the fresh read on Florida's move: the Panthers were not simply paying for production. They were buying certainty after a preferred bidder disappeared from the board.
Tkachuk produced 22 goals and 37 assists in 60 regular-season games for Florida. Those totals explain the attraction, but they do not explain why the market narrowed.
The player held the stronger card
His $8,205,714 cap hit also turns destination approval into a roster-building issue. A team cannot treat that contract like a rental; it needs commitment from the player and confidence from the locker room.
Robertson's inclusion sharpens the point. Conflicting reports about his interest suggest St. Louis was testing star-level options, yet neither path could be judged on trade value alone.
For Doug Armstrong and Jim Montgomery, that creates a truth: identifying the top-six target is only half the job. The Blues must first know whether that player wants their bench.
For Ottawa, the refusal may have reduced leverage before talks advanced further. One destination falling away can change the entire return without changing the player's talent.
Florida then gained something no boxscore captures: a star willing to enter Paul Maurice's room. That willingness can be worth as much as a pick when a blockbuster depends on cooperation.
The St. Louis rejection was not a footnote.
It was the pressure point.
