A Canadian city's mayor said he didn't want his NHL team in the playoffs

The viral post presents Sim's line as fresh. It was already public in November 2024, long before Vancouver's lost season.

Context matters. Sim said he wanted a Stanley Cup Final as a fan, then switched hats and described the safety pressure facing City Hall.

That does not make the wording smart. But it turns the story from cheering against his team into a clumsy admission about crowd planning.

The timing also clears the Canucks. Their 25-49-8 finish and 58 points had nothing to do with Sim's original remark; the line predates that lost season.

Vancouver's own record undercuts the harshest reading. On May 7, 2024, council approved up to $200,000 for community events and $840,000 for larger watch parties.

One day later, the city announced a 2,000-person Oak Meadows site and planned a 6,000-capacity PNE event for a deeper playoff run.

That sequence is the buried story.

Sim's city chose smaller, controlled sites away from downtown pressure points tied to 1994 and 2011.

The World Cup then gave Vancouver a live rehearsal. After staging 7 matches and outdoor fan events, the city now has a tested blueprint for future Canucks gatherings.

That is why the 2026 backlash misses the sharper target. The problem is not fear itself; it is Sim's failure to explain the actual operating plan behind it.

Manny Malhotra's roster should not carry a civic debate recycled without its date.

The Canucks finished with a -100 goal differential and went 9-27-5 at Rogers Arena. Those numbers explain the absence of playoff stress, not the quote's origin.

Sim's words deserve criticism because they were blunt and defeatist.

The cleaner verdict is tougher: Vancouver already proved controlled celebration works, yet its mayor still framed success as an unwanted civic burden.
